The latest product from our R&D team is here! The AVO DBW (Drive By Wire) Throttle Control unit is a neat bit of electronics that gives you a variety of power and economy settings for your DBW vehicle.
It arrived in the mail on Friday afternoon, about 30 minutes before we were to take our 2007 Subaru Outback to a big event! Luckily it takes all of about 10 minutes to install (provided you follow the instructions). Setting it up for the car did not take that long at all. While it's not going to magically wring 50whp out of the car, it did improve throttle response immensely in the Power mode (Po6 was the best compromise on this particular vehicle).
What I especially liked is how it actually made the feel of the throttle more linear, as it made it much easier to modulate the throttle in corners or while cruising at low rpms. The tip-in setting that Subaru sets up from the factory was always way to abrupt. It made it feel "sporty" off the line, but very hard to drive smoothly, especially in traffic.
And then there was the economy modes, which worked as advertised. It slowed down the throttle response tremendously, keeping everything under 30%. Of course, if you do need passing power, just put the pedal to the floor and it automatically phases into Normal mode. Once your done with that, it goes back into Eco mode. Not only was this good for wringing the most out of the gas mileage, there was much more fine response with small throttle inputs - this would be fantastic for off-roaders who just need absolute control.
And this works for any vehicle that uses a drive by wire throttle, not just Subaru models!
How it works:
The AVO DBW Throttle Controller allows you to re-map your throttle inputs to the throttle body controller, giving you full control over it’s behaviour. You may have noticed with your DBW car that the position of the gas pedal doesn’t necessarily correspond to the throttle response. This is because the factory settings are a non-linear map that decides what’s optimal for their needs, not yours. The AVO DBW Throttle controller gives that control back to you, where it should belong!
The DBW Controller unit allows you to choose between 3 separate modes of operation: Normal (Nor), Power (Po) and eControl (Ec).
• Po mode has 9 selectable steps with increasingly aggressive throttle mapping.
• Ec mode has 7 selectable steps with increasingly milder throttle mapping. When the throttle pedal is below 30% operation, Ec mode provide a far more precise throttle map from 0%-30% throttle opening. However, if the throttle goes above 30%, it will switch over to Nor mode for safety reasons.
• Nor mode is the normal throttle mapping from the factory.
Installing the DBW Controller is very easy, and can be accomplished in as little as 10 minutes. However, once the controller is installed, it will need to be programmed for your vehicle’s specific throttle mapping. Once this is done, it will remain in the Central unit’s memory even if removed from the vehicle.
